Background: Recorded in October 1997 during Sergio Fiorentino's 'Golden Indian Summer', this all-Liszt recital sadly proved to be his farewell to the recording studio. It is characterised as usual by Fiorentino's fabled translucency of tone, subtle use of pedal and emotional largesse - exceptional even by his standards. Fiorentino obliges us to ask why the much-maligned Ballades have been so neglected: his fearless, transcendental interpretations storm the heights and fathom the depths. Similar forces direct the Sonata, the Everest of the Romantic keyboard literature: Fiorentino takes all the time necessary for introspective exploration whilst investing the extrovert passages with a flashing fervour, all of which is somehow contained within a single mighty span. His Funérailles is a potent fusion of fury and lyricism while his recordings of La leggierezza and Waldesrauschen can be readily compared to the legendary recordings of the past. |
