Background: Judith, liberator of her people, was a favourite theme of baroque composers: Charpentier, Vivaldi, Jommelli & Mozart all set her story. Alessandro Scarlatti set it twice and believed La Giuditta to be the best of his oratorios. Here is his two-act drama of commanding theatrical tension, eloquent in its humanity, full of muscle and nerve. In the apocryphal Book of Judith, the Jewish heroine seduced the Assyrian general Holofernes, chopped off his head while he slept and then succeeded in smuggling his head out of the camp and back to her city. The Assyrians, without a commander, fell into confusion and fled. |
