Background: At the end of the sixteenth century, Florence was the scene of the greatest upheaval in musical history. Following the humanist aesthetic centred on the individual, musicians turned their backs on polyphony and adopted instead a type of singing that was closer to human expression. Thus, monody came into being. Caccini (taking inspiration from Plato) said that monody should be concerned 'firstly with the text, then with the rhythm and finally with the sound - in that order, and not the reverse'. Domenico Belli was in charge of music at the chapel of San Lorenzo, Florence, from 1613. In September 1619, he was engaged to work at the Medici court, where he remained until his death in May 1627. Belli was a prominent figure in the new movement. With Caccini, Peri and Cavalieri, he was one of the architects of this musical revolution. |
