Background: There is a story in the Auvergne about a piper, chased by a ferocious wolf, who saved himself by playing his bagpipe; the versions vary, but the animal either fled or began to dance under the charm of the music. In Berry, according to George Sand, the piper has power over wolves: he is the 'meneur de loups', the wolf-leader. Dances of the Shepherds… takes us into the traditional repertoires of Central France and the Auvergne with the emphasis on dance pieces, especially the bourrée - an ancient dance first recorded at the court of Louis XIII in 1605. |
