Background: Guillaume IX, Duke of Aquitaine, seventh Count of Poitiers, is the earliest troubadour whose works have survived. For those who still believe in the image of a troubadour serenading his lady beneath her window, Guillaume’s poems will come as a shock! Our idea of courtly love is not really in keeping with his texts. Yet although contemporary chronicles criticise the way he used his verses to amuse his companions, love is nevertheless a constant feature of his works. Sung and played on the medieval fiddle, here are eleven poems in the langue d’oc, belonging to a proud, virile, lively world in which the emphasis is laid on joy, youth and firmness of spirit. |
