Background: Charpentier's Méditations for Lent, staging the Passion of Christ, are taken from various sources: biblica and liturgical. Between the different parts of his sermon the orator would pause for the performance of petits motets, which was probably how the Méditations pour le Carême were presented. The pieces are short: they use limited forces and priority is given to declamation; but what ardent emotion, with heart-rending accents and tormented harmony!
