Background: The violist, composer, teacher and music theorist Christopher Simpson is remembered above all for his two books, The Division-violist (1659) and The Principles of Practical Music (1665). A Roman Catholic, he served during the English Civil War on the Royalist side, after which he found a post teaching viol to the son of an important Catholic, Sir Robert Bolles, Duke of Newcastle. With John Jenkins, Williams Lawes, Matthew Locke and Tobias Hume, Simpson was one of the most prominent musicians of the Elizabethan era - the Golden Age of English viol music. The Monthes and The Seasons, set for a treble and two bass viols accompanied by theorbo and organ or harpsichord, bring the English division style to its highest echelon. |
