Background: Like most great musicians of his time, Luigi Boccherini travelled a great deal. He composed many works for his own instrument, the cello: thirty or so sonatas and twelve concertos have come down to us. A great virtuoso, renowned for his dexterity, he combined Baroque style and performance with the foundations of Classical practices. The circumstances of his travels led him to play his works with all sorts of accompaniments, sometimes having to 'make do' in his early years with just a double bass (his father), or later just a violin (his friend, Manfredi) and some pieces exist in both sonata and concerto versions. On this recording Bruno Cocset and Les Basses Réunies present some of Boccherini's sonatas and concertos in 'chamber' versions, as they would have been performed by a musician on his travels in 18th-Century Europe. The accompaniment is provided by double bass, guitar, second cello, tenor violin and harpsichord, either simultaneously or in combinations. |
