Background: The composer and violinist Jean-Marie Leclair (1697-1764) made a name for himself first of all as a dancer and ballet-master: in France at that time playing the violin and dancing often went together. Apparently he was moody, easily offended, misanthropic, and neither a pleasant nor a happy man, but as a composer he was first-rate. With the exception of his opera, Scylla et Glaucus, most of his prolific output was devoted to instrumental works. He wrote several books of sonatas, published between 1723 and 1753, and two sets of six concertos (1737 and 1743/4), all but one of which are for violin with string accompaniment. His sonatas show both the boldness and the technical ease of their composer, particularly his modification of the Italian sonata style to accommodate French taste. |
