Background: The ensemble Café Zimmermann continues its recording of the orchestral output of JS Bach, the first complete recording of these works by a French group. The ensemble's very name is a reference to the concerts Bach gave with students of the Leipzig Collegium musicum in Gottfried Zimmermann's coffee house. The present release highlights the flute family. Framing the concertos BWV1053 and BWV1064, the Brandenburg Concerto and the Suite spotlight two recorders and a transverse flute respectively. Following frequent eighteenth-century practice, Bach himself transcribed several of his harpsichord concertos from concertos for other instruments whose originals are now lost. One of these was BWV1053, here presented in a reconstruction for oboe d'amore. |
