Background: Henry du Mont died in 1684. A few months previously he had been forced to resign from his position as master of the Royal Chapel, an appointment had held since 1663. Magnanimously Louis XIV presented him with a consolation prize: he had du Mont's finest 'grands motets', works composed for the royal court, printed by Christophe Ballard. Frédéric Desenclos presents three 'grands motets' by Henry Du Mont from centuries of posthumous tinkerings and interpretations, notably by Ballard and the composer Brossard. He uses the same forces, five voices and continuo, for his rendering of these motets composed for the Chapel of the Louvre. Here they are restored, rid of their frippery, revealing superb, limpid counterpoint. Only one - Super flumina Babylonis - has been recorded before. |
