Background: Louis Couperin, the uncle of François Couperin 'Le Grand', was one of the most brilliant harpsichordists of the seventeenth century. Influenced by the Italian Frescobaldi and the German Froberger, his style, which nevertheless remained perfectly French, represents the world of Baroque tradition, bringing out quite remarkably its diverse forms and idioms. His 'unmeasured' Preludes and his Dance show great inspiration. Skip Sempé, a master of the French harpsichord, shows great flair and insight in this performance of works by Louis Couperin, played on one of his favourite instruments. |
