Background: Couperin taught the harpsichord and he appears to have been very exacting. His standards led him not only to provide precious advice on the interpretation of the music, but also to write a treatise on playing the harpsichord, L'Art de toucher le clavecin, first published in 1716. It includes eight preludes, written in different keys like those of Bach. They are small masterpieces, freed from the constraints of form. However, François Couperin was wary of allowing the performer too much freedom: 'it is quite rare to find geniuses who are capable of improvising,' he says. So while retaining the spirit of the 'French prelude', he condensed the writing. La Sultanne, which is found in just one manuscript (along with La Superbe), stands apart in Couperin's chamber works. |
