Background: Guillaume Dufay was the greatest musician of the fifteenth century. The polyphonic Mass Ordinary originated at the papal court of Avignon in the fourteenth century and Machaut was the first to compose such a setting. The Missa 'Se la face ay pale' is the first of four great Masses of Dufay's maturity. The Mass is sung here as it must have been by those choirs. It is performed by male voices a cappella and the Gregorian melodies of the Proper alternate with the majestic polyphony of the Mass Ordinary, which uses as cantus firmus a fine secular song by Dufay, Se la face ay pale. While ushering in the Renaissance, this work by Guillaume Dufay represents a culmination in the music of the Middle Ages. |
