Background: Marc-Antoine Charpentier was undoubtedly the most prolific composer of sacred music of the Ancien Régime. Most of the works selected for this recording were written during the period 1688-1698, when he was attached as composer and maître de musique to the Jesuit church and school. In the motet dedicated to St Louis, In honorem Sancti Ludovici Regis Galliæ canticum tribus vocibus cum simphonia (H323), a triumphant king is celebrated to the sound of a fanfare of trumpets. Despite the references to the crusades and their precious spoils (nails from the Cross), the repeated 'Ludovicus triumphet, Ludovicus regnet, Ludovicus vivat' that conclude the motet appear to be intended for another king: His Majesty Louis XIV. |
