Background: The ciaccona (chaconne) is an ostinato bass figure brought back to Europe from South America by the Spaniards. In the C17th it spread rapidly all over Europe and enjoyed great popularity. Its constantly recurring catchy bass line gives the music an infectiously joyful, driving strength. This kind of flexible invention was given the name of stylus phantasticus by music theorists of the time. Dietrich Buxtehude, the most notable organ master of the generation before Johann Sebastian Bach, also wrote chamber music in the stylus phantasticus that has been very little heard up to now. It is striking for its originality, its outstanding musical quality and its intense expressive power. |
