Background: Around 1674 Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber composed fifteen Mysteries of the Virgin Mary, his first sonatas for violin and continuo. He dedicated them to Maximilian Gandolph von Khuenburg, Archbishop of Salzburg. For all but two of the sixteen pieces (fifteen sonatas plus a Passacaglia) Biber used ‘scordatura’, literally 'mistuning', systematically related to the chosen key. This enables all sorts of unusual effects and sounds, as well as permitting skilful double-stopping. |
