Background: The repertoire represented by the French mélodie and vocal duet of the second half of the nineteenth century belonged to a society in which sources of entertainment were rare and the playing of music was regarded as evidence of education, refinement and sensitivity. Small formats were used to depict, quite briefly, a scene, an atmosphere or a mood. The composers who indulged in this genre - here Charles Gounod, Édouard Lalo and Camille Saint-Saëns - adopted the themes that were prevalent in the poetry of their time (dreams of travel, fêtes galantes, bucolic scenes, celebrations of springtime, mutability…) and gradually raised the genre to the level of chamber music. |
