Background: Claude Le Jeune lived through one of the most troubled periods in French history. Several times, religious conflicts forced him to move and seek new patronage. Psalms in French, motets in Latin, sometimes using melodies from the Huguenot Psalter, sometimes borrowing plainchant melodies: the music on this programme is a fine illustration of the religious tolerance that many people aspired to in France at that time.
