Background: Michel Richard de Lalande, who worked at the court at Versailles, was probably the most influential and most talented composer of sacred music of the early eighteenth century. Of the French composers of his generation, he made the greatest contribution to the corpus of sacred works for female voices, at a time when such music was generally a male preserve.
