Background: Ignazio Albertini is first heard of in a letter written by Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, one of the most distinguished violinists of the seventeenth century. Albertini was born around 1644, probably in Milan but we do not know where he trained as a musician. By the age of about twenty-seven, he was in Vienna (as Schmelzer's letter informs us), but we do not know what positions he held there, nor whether he spent the rest of his life in the city. Albertini's music is strongly marked by the musical language of his Austrian contemporaries, that is to say, we find a mixture of Italian influences and a virtuoso violin tradition that was more typical of the countries north of the Alps. His sonatas are characterised by strong contrasts and smooth transitions, Albertini's music is strongly marked by the musical language of his Austrian contemporaries, that is to say, we find a mixture of Italian influences and a virtuoso violin tradition that was more typical of the countries north of the Alps. His sonatas are characterised by strong contrasts and smooth transitions, and metrically free sections alternate with strongly rhythmic passages. Their virtuosity, dance-like charm and sweet melodies make for rich diversity. |
