Background: This CD is the result of an adventure that began five years ago. Musicological research and the rediscovery of a fascinating instrument have led to a new interpretation of well-known works by Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach was famed as a keyboard musician; he was an exceptional exponent of the organ, harpsichord, clavichord, and even the recently invented fortepiano, but we will never know the full wealth of the instruments he may have played. Some rare instruments, such as the pedal harpsichord, certainly belonged to his everyday world. This instrument is perfectly in keeping with Bach's music. It may be used for organ pieces with a pedal keyboard part, as well as for pieces with a pedal keyboard part that were not composed specifically for the organ (the Trio Sonatas). It also provides the harpsichord repertoire with extra sound resources. And it lends itself beautifully to the exercise of transcription, at which Bach himself excelled. |
