Background: Both of these quartets appeared in the wake of a long wave that had begun in the 1880s and which witnessed the blossoming of a veritable chamber music school in France. Albéric Magnard's op.16 is an energetic, conquering work, whereas, conversely, Fauré's op.121 is the final score of a discreet, reserved man, aged 80.
