Background: Based on his exhaustive research, Sigiswald Kuijken made two important discoveries regarding the historical performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons; firstly, that in the18th Century many cello parts were actually meant to be performed on the violoncello da spalla, the little sister of the violoncello, which was played like a violin or viola. Secondly, that multiple casting of strings was rather the exception than the rule for Vivaldi. Kuijken follows both examples with this recording and the result seems to prove him right. |
