Background: Silvius Leopold Weiss was born in Breslau in 1686, making him an exact contemporary of J S Bach, Handel and Scarlatti. He is regarded as the last great composer of music for the lute. During his life time the instrument was at its highest level of popularity but after Weiss’ death the lute gave way to the harpsichord which was soon to become the instrument of choice for both composers and public. Originally released in 1979, this is a welcome re-issue not least due to the masterful performance of lutenist Konrad Junghanel. |
