Background: Jean-Philippe Rameau only made a name for himself late in life, particularly in part, to his largescale works, from Les Indes galantes in 1735 to Dardanus in 1739. These very works proved to be very divisive in 18th century Paris, where his output was derided by the traditionalists. Dardanus was produced at the height of the dispute and there were many differing opinions as to the value of the work. The piece underwent a number of revisions and the Pinchgut Opera production is based primarily on the original 1739 version with some additions from the 1744 version. |
