Background: The first complete unabridged and untransposed version of this Richard Strauss opera is presented by CPO. Die Liebe der Danae was Strauss' penultimate opera and is still among the least frequently performed of the German's epic dramatic works. Composed in 1940 at a time of political unrest, Strauss found some solace in absorbing himself in this project and so composed the opera very quickly. It was due to the onset of war that Strauss postponed the first semi-public performance until the 1944 Salzburg Festival, with the official premiere being given posthumously in 1952. It is partly owing to these factors that the work has never firmly established itself within the mainstream operatic repertoire. Recorded at a live performance at Kiel Castle in 2001 with the Kiel Opera Chorus and Philharmonic Orchestra, this boxed set contains full English libretto. CATALOGUE NR: 9999672 |
