Background: An opportunity to hear a selection of choral works by Pachelbel, a composer who today is almost exclusively remembered for his Canon and Gigue. This disc of Easter Cantatas offers a representive cross section of Pachelbel's sacred vocal oeuvre, composed while he served as organist at St. Sebaldus, Nuremberg. The Nuremberg-born composer was one of the leading German composers in his day and attracted much admiration for his organ and keyboard works. This programme follows a hypothetical Nuremberg vesper service on one of the holy days of Easter, but stylistically suggests that the works were in fact composed at different times of Pachelbel's life. |
