Background: One of Handel's last two operas, Imeneo was written for the 1740/1741 season. This version, performed in the original Italian, recreates consistently the score as first performed in London by the composer. Compared to some of his operas, Imeneo is almost a chamber-scale drama. However, the dramatic tension is not comprised by the smaller forces used as there is still a powerful interaction involving only a few characters.

Handel's affection for this work is perhaps indicated by his choice of the opera for his last public performances of an Italian work in Dublin in 1742.
