Background: One of Handel's last two operas, Imeneo was written for the 1740/1741 season. This version, performed in the original Italian, recreates consistently the score as first performed in London by the composer. Compared to some of his operas, Imeneo is almost a chamber-scale drama. However, the dramatic tension is not comprised by the smaller forces used as there is still a powerful interaction involving only a few characters. Handel's affection for this work is perhaps indicated by his choice of the opera for his last public performances of an Italian work in Dublin in 1742. CATALOGUE NR: 9999152 |
