Background: Fuchs' importance as a teacher of composition and consequently a major figure in the shaping of musical history is undisputed, having counted Gustav Mahler, Hugo Wolf, Jean Sibelius, Franz Schreker and Alexander Zemlinsky amongst his students at the Vienna Academy of Music. But as a composer in his own right Fuchs is one of Brahms several contemporaries who, along with Bruch, Herzogenberg and Raff, have been overlooked in recent years. Fuchs composed his Piano Concerto in 1880, contemporaneously to Brahms' Second Piano Concerto. Parallels can be drawn between the two works through the full chordal textures and frequent alternation between duplets and triplets which characterise the works. Fuchs work nonetheless shows much originality. CATALOGUE NR: 9998932 |
