Background: Ernst Toch approached the genre of the symphony in his later years, composing his First Symphony in 1950 at the age of sixty-three with a further seven symphonies subsequently completed within a short space of time. This was undoubtedly due to Toch's circumstances: As an Austrian Jew, he left Europe in 1933 and earnt his living as a film composer in America. During the ensuing years he didn't feel at home in his new country of residence, an unease that wasn't helped by the atrocities taking place in Europe, and as a result Toch was overcome by creative paralysis. Toch's First Symphony is dedicated to his close friend and mentor, Joseph Fuchs. The Fourth Symphony, composed in 1957, was written at an artist's colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. The work is dedicated to Marian MacDowell, widow of American composer Edward MacDowell and owner of the artist's colony. Neither work has a formal or traditional symphonic structure but Toch's film music background is evident, and the Fourth Symphony is interspersed with text between the movements.
