Background: Haydn probably wrote these works termed on the original title page 'Sonataes pour le piano avec accompagnement de violon & violoncello' during the winter of 1794/95. Since the trios are in three movements of similar formal design, it is thought that Haydn followed the orientation of his first London cycle in his overall planning of this second cycle. The second trio HobXV:22 merits special attention; the larger dimensions of its movements and its more personal expression make it one of Haydn's most magnificent contributions to the trio genre. He dedicated them to Princess Maria Josepha Hermenegilde von und zu Liechtenstein, the wife of Prince Nikolaus II Esterhazy. |
