Background: Villa-Lobos' twelve symphonies span his entire creative career from 1916 to 1957. This disc begins with Villa-Lobos' 1945 Seventh Symphony, which was in fact premiered in London by the London Symphony Orchestra under the composer in 1949. Composed in Rio de Janiero for an American competition, it shows a departure from his previous symphonies as it is not primarily concerned with programmaticism and shows a greater complexity in melodic and rhythmic construction than previous works. This great late symphony is complemented by Sinfonietta No.1 which dates from 1916, the beginning of Villa-Lobos' compositional career. The work is dedicated to the memory of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and uses some of his themes in a texture that is scored for classical chamber orchestra. CATALOGUE NR: 9997132 |
