Background: The House of Habsberg produced more composing potentates than any other royal house - which is hadly surprising given the fact that they held sway in Austria, perhaps the world's most musical country. This recording documents the works of three emperor with a wonderful selection. Emperor Ferdinand III (1608-57) became acquainted above all with the Italian music of his time through his teacher Giovanni Valentini and maintained friendly professional ties to composers such as Monteverdi. Already during his lifetime he was praised as an outstanding musician. Ferdinand's son Leoplod I (1640-1705 continued the tradition established by his father. He studied with Bertali, had command of the harpsichord and a number of other instruments, and ranks as the most productive and versatile of all the composing emperors. The great musical talent of leoplod's son Joseph I (1678-1711) was certified in statements by qualified contemporaries. Unfortunately, not very many compositions by him are extant, but the style of those that have survived demonstrates the influence of Alessandro Scarlatti. |
