Background: The large-scale oratorio Christus occupied Liszt for many years. His work on it was a labour of love, his own highly personal belief and his new revolutionary musical ideas were expressed in it. The work is seldom performed, due to its immense proportions and difficulties. It is a monumental work, a landmark in Roman-Catholic Church music.

This excellent recording is with choral specialist Helmuth Rilling, and received the Grand Prix of the Liszt Akademie in Budapest.
