Background: Left unfinished at his death, Bruckner's Ninth Symphony has become accepted in the form of its first three movements; even as the 'only authentic version', and many have accepted the Adagio as a fitting ending, despite the composer's indications to the contrary. This is the first recording of the 2011 revision by Samale / Mazzuca /Phillips / Cohrs (SMPC) - arguably the most comprehensive, accurate and valid realisation of Bruckner's intentions.
This is the first recording of a new revision of the SMPC Complete Performance Version which proposes a way to realize Bruckner's intention of combining themes from all four movements, based on more than 600 bars of incomplete autograph score, sketches and drafts. New insights continue to come to light and this is the 5th revision of the SMPC edition, in which the coda has received particular attention, giving a more coherent impression of these important final bars.Dr Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs says; 'From a fresh re-examination of the manuscripts it was possible to find some convincing new solutions, binding the music even better together.' |
