Background: Russian composer Arthur-Vincent Lourié lived from 1892 till 1966. As a composer he joined the “futurist” movement, establishing connections with foremost painters and authors of his time. He was deeply influenced by the famous Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, whose poetry he set to music. The soviets banned his music and he fled to Paris where he lived out the rest of his life. Lourie’s style reflects the cultural climate of his time, in which there were the experiments with 12-tone composition, the cosmic symbolism of Scriabin and expressionism of Mossolov and others. |
