Background: After suffering total defeat at the hands of the Red Army, many Cossacks ended up in the diaspora. In 1921 it was with these very Russian refugees that Serge Jaroff set about forming a choir in the Turkish internment camp Chilingir, near Constantinople. To this day, Jaroff's choir is the most copied though never rivalled. It was Serge Jaroff, who modified Russian Orthodox Church music for classical performance. Otto Hofner recently handed over the rights of the choir in 2001 to Wanja Hlibka. Once Jaroff's youngest soloist, Hlibka keeps Jaroff's tradition alive, although Jaroff remains unrivalled. Ever since it was founded the Don Cossack Choir has always comprised Russian refugees or Russians who have settled in the West. |
