Background: Being born in Argentina, in the southern hemisphere, Mauricio Kagel's associations with the points of the compass are diametrically opposed to the emotions and feelings of Europeans. For him the south is not at all the embodiment of heat, but rather of cold: Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and Antarctic. In the same way the term 'The Middle East' can evoke a different imagination depending on the place where one grew up. Kagel's composition in eight pieces reflects the four quadrants North, East, South and West. It remained a constant challenge for him to compose everything for the same line-up of clarinet, piano, harmonium, two violins, viola, cello and double bass, with only the percussion instruments changing from one piece to another. |
