Background: The Repentant Thief for clarinet and orchestra was written in 1990, two years after John Tavener composed his most celebrated instrumental piece The Protecting Veil. The Repentant Thief has sections in a similarly meditative style to The Protecting Veil, interspersed with contrasting dance sections. Scored for soprano, flute, viola and harp, To a Child Dancing in the Wind is a song cycle based on the poems of WB Yeats. Tavener’s contemplative colours mirror the nature of the poems, which reflect on childhood innocence. An earlier work of Tavener’s, the song cycle Lamentation, Last Prayer and Exaltation from 1977 is scored for solo soprano and hand bells, a combination which, along with the pre-Christian Irish, Latin and Old Slavonic texts creates an unearthly, entrancing ambience A Mini Song Cycle For Gina also uses texts by Yeats, concerning loss and the passing of time. Melina is a tribute to the Greek actress Melina Mercouri. The works for voice on this disc are performed by Tavener’s long-term collaborator Patricia Rozario, with the composer joining her as pianist on A Mini Song Cycle For Gina. |
