Background: Richard Strauss and the Staatskapelle Dresden have always been a significant collaboration. Italian-born Fabio Luisi now continues this rich tradition. Luisi will launch a new Strauss cycle with the release of Ein Heldenleben and Metamorphosen conducting the Staatskapelle Dresden on Sony Classical.

Luisi follows in the footsteps of Rudolf Kempe's legendary Strauss recordings of the 1970s, which retain benchmark status to this day. 'Kempe was ahead of his time back then in his understanding of Richard Strauss,' says the Italian maestro. 'On the whole, he stripped Strauss's works down to their basic elements, and we have to a large extent based our performance on his readings.'
