Background: This disc features works by American composers that are, in the words of soloist Sharon Kam, 'classical, jazz and everything in between'. The virtuoso clarinetist performs concertos by Copland and Artie Shaw, works for clarinet and jazz band by Bernstein and Gould and arrangements of Gershwin songs. Sharon Kam first performed the Copland clarinet concerto in 1992 with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and Kurt Masur. She has since performed the work as often as the Mozart Concerto, and its has become something of a signature piece for her. Kam was keen to record the Copland concerto but first had to find other pieces that would complement it on disc. A colleague introduced her to the Morton Gould, Leonard Bernstein and Artie Shaw works, which she has since performed on many occasions. The four Gershwin songs were arranged especially for this recording by the veteran arranger John Cameron. |
