Background: Richard Wagner re-worked his score for Tannhauser over a period of thirty years. He originally composed it between 1842 and 1845 while he was Kapellmeister in Dresden but he continued to make changes as his skills developed. The cast for this recording features leading Wagner singers. This recording is of the Dresden version with the 'Venusberg' scene as re-written for the Paris production of 1861. The composer made further adjustments to the score for performances in Munich and Vienna in the mid-1870s. |
