Background: African Rhythms combines music by the Aka Pygmies of Central Africa and the music of Ligeti and Reich, both of whom have been strongly influenced by them. The Pygmies perform their own music; the works of Ligeti and Reich are performed by the outstanding pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard. The Ligeti Etudes were composed for piano, while the Reich works were composed for two and five performers respectively using clapped hands and claves. Aimard performs both works, the recording of the Reich works is accomplished through multi-track overdub. |
