Background: This live recording of Jake Heggie's opera Dead Man Walking captures a stellar cast including Susan Graham in the powerfully moving true story of Sister Helen Prejean, a nun from Louisiana. The story of love, redemption, death and forgiveness is the centre piece of the story. A young nun, Sister Helen, who is working with the poor on the outskirts of New Orleans, becomes a pen pal to Joseph de Rocher, a convicted murderer on death row. He asks her to become his spiritual adviser. Angry, arrogant and defiant, de Rocher refuses to take responsibility or ackowledge his guilt, pertraying himself as the victim. Sister Helen makes an extraordinary journey through pain, conflict and grief to help Joseph find his way to the truth and to the redemptive power of love. |
