Background: Johann Sebastian Bach and Dave Brubeck may seem strange companions but this unique collection of original works transcribed for cello ensemble illustrates their shared genius for improvisation and for writing music of the deepest humanity. It also underscores Brubeck's connection with Yale University, where he is a Duke Ellington Fellow and his friend and neighbour Aldo Parisot (who was also cello teacher to Brubeck's son Matthew) directs the legendary Yale Cellos. Brubeck's Regret which, in the composer's own words, expresses a 'sweet sadness, a longing for lost moments, might-have-beens, and a past that cannot be relived', was premièred in the version for cello ensemble by The Yale Cellos and the composer himself described the performance as 'an unforgettable experience'. |
