Background: A child prodigy at the court of Louis XIV, Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre was famous both as a harpsichordist and composer. One of only four French composers known to publish a book of harpsichord pieces in the 17th century, de La Guerre wrote in the style brisé, an attractive arpeggiated, or broken, style borrowed from lute playing. Her captivating harpischord suites contain as many varieties and shades of expression as there are movements. |
