Background: The Naxos Deutsche Schubert-Lied-Edition presents all of Schubert's Lieder, over 700 songs, grouped according to the poets who inspired him. This is the first of two discs devoted to settings by Claudius, Hölty and Stolberg, the poets of the 'Göttinger Hainbund', who wrote some of the most popular folk-style poems of the German Empfindsamkeit (Poetry of Sensibility). Themes include grief, death and ressurrection as well as love, friendship and humour. Together with the classical poetry of Goethe and Schiller, the 'poets of sensibility' played the most important part above all in Schubert's early years as a composer. |
