Background: Widely known today for the first of his three violin concertos, Bruch composed a sizeable number of works for violin and orchestra in a tuneful, romantic idiom. The virtuosic Scottish Fantasy, written for Pablo de Sarasate, incorporates folk melodies collected during his travels across Britain. In four linked movements, it ends with a fiery Allegro guerriero, a commemoration of the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 with the tune Scots wha hae. The much less well known Serenade, originally intended as a fourth violin concerto, is an engaging work which, although written as late as 1900, recalls Schumann and Mendelssohn. |
