Background: Throughout his long life Joaquín Rodrigo composed a prolific variety of orchestral pieces, concertos and instrumental music for guitar, piano, violin, and cello. Rodrigo was also a virtuoso pianist, whose recitals included both his own compositions and representative selections of Spanish keyboard masters from the 16th century onwards. Artur Pizarro's recording presents some of the finest examples of Rodrigo’s piano works, ranging from nostalgic miniatures, tributes to the music of Spain's Golden Age and the composer's native Valencia, to more extended pieces which deploy subtle twentieth-century harmonies and textures. |
